REQUIRED SUPPLY LIST

Students must provide these supplies, as they are not included in the session fee.

⦁    Canvas (recommended sizes: 8"x10" or 9"x12")
⦁    Acrylic Paint Set (should include atleast these 7 pigments: Titanium White, Mars Black, Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue, Hooker's Green, Cadmium Yellow, Burnt Umber )
⦁    Paint Brush Set (multiple sizes and styles such as Filbert, Round, Fan, Angled, Flat, and Liners)
⦁    Photo, drawings, or print-outs to be used for reference images

STUDIO STYLE

      Local painters have an opportunity to experience a genuine art studio environment within their own community! This open studio allows artists of all skill levels to approach acrylic painting with an instructor to offer guidance and soft critique.

      Artists choose the subject for their painting according to their own interests - they will NOT be painting an image preselected by the instructor. During active studio time, the instructor will offer individual instruction with each working artist.

      Between class sessions, artists are encouraged to work on their projects at home, incorporating the techniques that they learned from individual instruction with the instructor. ​

CLASS STRUCTURE

      A few minutes will be spent at the beginning of the session to sign in and set up. Artists must sign the Drop In form and pay the Drop In fee at the door. Either the Instructor or an assistant will take the payment. Afterwards, artists are free to take a seat and set up their work space. On one side of the studio is a box of tabletop easels and other supplementary materials that artists are free to use as they paint. Once everyone is signed in and seated, active studio time will begin.

      During active studio time, the instructor will periodically walk around the room to evaluate each artist's progress, offering advice and constructive critique.

      At 3:40, twenty minutes before the end of class, students should begin the process of cleaning up their work station. Dirty water cups will be rinsed out, paint brushes washed, and easels returned to the box. By 4:00PM, the room is ready for the next scheduled recreational activity.

ATTENDANCE CAP

      Studio attendance is capped at a total of 9 seats per painting session. This is a necessary limit to ensure that studio time stays on schedule and keeps the space focused on painting. Seats are first come first serve. Once the classroom capacity reaches the maximum number of attendees, studio doors will close. If all 9 session seats have been filled, either secure your place in advance through preregistration or arrive early the following week.

STUDIO ETIQUETTE​​

1. As the artist, you have the final say of what gets put onto the canvas! However, every artist attending the studio session should use this opportunity to receive creative feedback from a trained professional!

2. Acrylic paint is a permanent medium, so artists should be dressed appropriately with either an apron or a painting smock.

3. Everyone should arrive with an art-forward mindset appropriate for the classroom and must conduct themselves respectfully towards their instructor and fellow artists. Those that cause disruption or create a hostile learning environment may be asked to leave.

4. When artists refill the cups of water that they used to rinse their brushes, please take care not to let globs of paint fall into the sink. These globs of paint may dry inside the drain, causing facility sinks to become clogged. 

5. Avoid spilling acrylic paint on facility property such as floors, chairs, tables, doors, and sinks. If some paint accidentally gets on a surface other than your canvas, please clean it with a wet paper towel as soon as possible.

6. Some basic materials will be provided for artists to use, such as tabletop easels, plastic palettes, water cups, and student-grade brushes. These items are supplied out of pocket by the Instructor, not the facility, so treat these items with respect and return them to the supply cart at the end of the studio session. If artists find these materials lacking, they are welcome to bring in their own art supplies. 

7. Artists must temper their visions for what can realistically be accomplished within the 3 hour session. They are encouraged to take their work home after the session has ended to continue painting, or attend following sessions until the artwork is complete to their satisfaction.

8. Twenty minutes before the end of the session, artists are expected to begin cleaning up their work areas, collecting their belongings, and returning easels and other provided materials to the Instructor's supply cart. Each person is individually responsible for the space that they use and must show respect for the facility that the Community Center has provided us.

PROCEEDS

      Studio profits are shared between the Instructor and the facility. Items such as easels, paper towels, spray bottles, and tablecloths are paid out of the instructor's personal budget for the classroom, and the Drop In Fee helps to cover these necessary expenses.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What skill level should I be at to attend a session?

Artists of any skill level, from beginner to professional, is welcome to attend a studio session!

How much individual help will I actually get?

Each student will be given one-on-one guidance as the instructor walks around the classroom to evaluate students' work. Students may also call the instructor over for assistance if the instructor is otherwise unoccupied. 

Smaller class sizes will allow for more time and attention towards individual students' needs. The instructor will 

How intense is the critique?

Critique is gentle and focuses on answering questions and helping artists to solve problems that they encounter in their work. Critique will never be turned over to other artists for suggestions, and the instructor will not open the floor for classroom critiques. This is to ensure each student maintains a sense of personal security for their work. Students are free to confer with fellow classmates if they wish.

Is there homework?

No, there will not be any homework or obligations outside of the studio.

Is this foundational training or just a one-time experience?

Students will be introduced to foundations through guided instruction.

May I bring a guest?

Guests are not allowed within classroom unless they are paid participants. The instructor wishes to maintain the 3-hour session as an educational and art-focused experience, not a social one.

Where can I buy art supplies for the class?

There are many online resources for artists to purchase supplies from, such as Blick. Artecho is an online art brand that offers good starter pack of acrylic paints found on Amazon. Craft stores like Michael's and Hobby Lobby also sell paint supplies.

Will acrylic paint stain my clothes permanently?

Yes, acrylic paint is a permanent medium and will stain clothing and other surfaces it comes into contact with. Due to this, tables must be covered with tablecloths and students are expected to dress appropriately for painting.

Am I expected to clean up after myself?

Yes. The room in which the paint session is hosted belongs to the Oscoda Community Center, so we must respect city property by maintaining its cleanliness and order. During the last 20 minutes of the paint session, students should begin cleaning up their stations - 

I don't want to paint with acrylic paints. Can I bring a different type of paint, like watercolors or oil?

No. The classroom will not be equipped for other paint mediums. The time allotted for this class will be devoted to working with acrylic paint. 

Can I bring my dog to class?

Pets and ESA are not be allowed in the classroom. Untrained animals can cause disruptions and the classroom is not a space equipped to care for animals. We must also be mindful of those with allergies to pet dander. Service Animals are allowed.
